Last English Breakfast

Breakfast was included with our stay at the Bulawayo Club. Every morning it was the same thing: eggs, sausage, potatoes, toast, bacon, beans, and a roasted tomato. The only thing you could request to change things up were how your eggs were done: either scrambled or sunny side up. Unfortunately there also weren’t great food options nearby. We were all quite tired of the same subpar breakfast and lack of variety at lunch and dinner in and around the hotel. It is a welcome relief to be in South Africa, where there is a lot more variety, and prices are also cheaper. I threatened the boys as we left the Joberg terminal that if they misbehaved, they would have to have an English breakfast in the morning.

While Kyusik was doing a call, we walked from our hotel to a nearby Thai place for takeout. Although it wasn’t the best food we’ve ever had, it was a hugely refreshing change from what we have been eating. It was also a bit of a shock to suddenly be surrounded by lots of international travelers, particularly Americans, while we went through immigration. I guess we’ve gotten used to being surrounded by Zimbabweans. The masking situation is also quite different here. In Zimbabwe, everyone masks, even when outside. If we walked around outside without our masks, several people would inquire where our masks were. The nice thing about the Bulawayo Club was that it was very empty and drafty, with so many of its windows and doors open, that we could often take off our masks without worrying.

Kyusik and I have been like ships in the night. While I was gone all day for my meetings, he would take the boys out and figure out lunch. Then I’d take over at dinner time, when he would have back to back calls until 1 am, eating his dinner during his meetings. He’s currently hiding out in the bathroom on a call because it’s 11 pm here. He barely made the board meeting where he needed to present, as we were checking into the hotel 15 min before it was supposed to start. This is despite the fact that he is supposed to have every first Friday of the month off.

We are looking forward to flying to Capetown tomorrow morning. However, it is supposed to rain 4 of the 5 days we are there. Apparently it was the coldest it has been in years in Bulawayo, with lows in the 40s and highs in the mid 50s. It is also nice to be at a hotel where there is heat!

  1. Interesting observation about masks there! I imagine you'll fine good food in Capetown.

  2. I'm sure the boys will really appreciate having better food options now. Sorry to hear that the weather will not be cooperating in Capetown. Hope you are prepared for rain.
