Almost perfect last day

We would have had a perfect last day in CDMX if Kyusik and Acadian weren't still sick. At least Acadian stopped vomiting. I would succumb later to the same thing a day after we returned home.

For our last breakfast, we headed to Centro Histórico or the historical center, to El Cardenal, a Mexican restaurant and institution recommended by a DrPH friend who grew up in CDMX. It also appears on all of the blogs and lists for best breakfast in the city. Everything there is made in house, including the fabulous pan dulce (sweet bread), hot chocolate, and cafe de olla. We ordered all three of those things. Of course we had to try the concha, which was delicious, and shared the huevos rancheros, two sunny side up eggs with a scrumptious tomato and white bean sauce, which we devoured with the delicious bread served on the side.

I had read that we could go see the Diego Rivera murals in the Public Education Secretary office as long as we brought a photo id. So we headed there after breakfast. We were delighted by how extensive the murals were, covering the entire periphery on three levels and the stairwells as well. We had seen a projection of one mural at the SFMOMA when we went to a Diego Rivera exhibit last November. They even captured the sound of the birds that chirp away in the jacaranda trees. Kyusik left to work near our flat, while Acadian (unwillingly) and I lingered a bit longer to enjoy the murals. Then we headed past the Templo Mayor, the ruins of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, before attempting to see the Rivera murals at the National Palace. Unfortunately, you can only see them on an official tour, which we had just missed. Overall I was quite impressed with Acadian's appreciation at the Frida house, River museum, and Teotihuacan, especially because he was quite impatient when we went to the SFMOMA 5 months ago.

Since Acadian's stomach was still hurting him, we headed to Pastelería Ideal, an iconic bakery from the 1920's, where we bought 3 vanilla conchas and 1 chocolate to take home with us. I also got a suadero taco and tripe taco and jamaica (hibiscus) agua fresca for lunch, which Acadian watched me eat. We took the metro to Roma Norte to get sorbet (strawberry for Acadian and passionfruit for me) from a famous place called Neveria Roxy. Kyusik walked to meet us and brought along his laptop. We had time to kill before heading to the airport, so we stopped for agua de chocolate and a bean tamale for me and a tisane for Kyusik at a tortilleria run by Enrique Olvera, a chef famous for his restaurant Pujol. We also bought some black and red tortillas to take home with us. They are more purple and green, which we discovered after opening them when we got home. Our flight was delayed by three hours, so rather than getting home at a reasonable time, we arrived home at 1 am.
