Waterpolo and art
Even though he could barely swim a few laps, Bryce tried out water polo in the fall. Over the course of several months, he worked hard and became a strong swimmer and one of the better players on the JV team. He also made some great friends. His teammates voted him as the most improved. The team is really sweet with the senior boys taking the frosh under their wings and giving them advice in the locker rooms. One senior hosted the entire team at his family's winery for a sleepover. In a photo at the end of the season, Bryce is doing a speech to honor one of the senior boys with whom he was closest. Bryce has enjoyed the sport so much that he then did club water polo over the winter, which meant that Kyusik and I had to take turns doing a very complicated carpool to Burlingame 4 days/week with 4 other families. It was a 3-4 hour commitment because after driving there and back, the practices were 2 hours, and it was too far for the parent to drive home in between. Bryce is now on the swim team this spring and is a freestyle specialist, doing the 500 yd, 200 yd, 100 yd, 400 and 200 yd free relays, and the freestyle leg of the 200 IM. Unfortunately Kyusik and I have yet to see a meet because they are either in Marin or East Bay in the middle of the week or in SF and start too early for us to get there in time. One thing he won't be doing any time soon is synchronized swimming! Two sophomore girls asked him if he wanted to perform this routine, which one of the coaches then filmed. He’s the one in the middle.
Bryce has also been taking 1.5 hour art classes for a couple years in West Portal. He's progressed from colored pencils, pastels, and watercolors to acrylics. He took so long on this watercolor dog that Kyusik and I joked it is worth 100s of dollars in how many classes it took him, but we were really impressed with the results. In school he's been taking a series of art classes that all 9th graders must take: drawing and painting, architecture, video, and photography. He drew these waterpolo briefs for video class. For some reason all 4 of the classes seem to involve quite a bit of drawing. I'm posting a photo of the Japanese museum he selected to draw for his architecture class and Grampy & Grammy's visit to his school.
Awesome job, Bryce! Your artwork is beautiful.
